• If the customer advises a CenterPoint Energy crew is responsible for damaging the underground service lines, then our company could be responsible for getting the repairs made.  Please refer customers in this situation to the Claims Department so that a thorough investigation may be conducted.
  • Customers should be informed that all bypass charges stop on the day they notify us that the repairs to their underground service drops have been completed.  If a permit is required, the charges stop on the day the permit is received.
  • The cost for a temporary bypass is $261.00.  This charge is not prorated.  Thus, if the temporary bypass is only used for one or two days, and then removed after all of the repairs have been completed successfully by an electrician, the customer is still responsible for the full $261.00.
  • CenterPoint Energy crews install about 80 bypasses per month.  This number tends to increase considerably if there is heavy rainfall.
  • Whereas a temporary bypass cable can remain installed for as long as a customer needs it, it is important to note that it is not designed for long-term usage.  An effort should be made to have the underground electrical service line repairs made as soon as possible.  CenterPoint Energy does reserve the right to remove the bypass cable at any time.
  • If customers switch retail electric providers while the temporary bypass cable is installed, they will still be billed the $261.00 fee.  The fee is always billed through the customer’s retail electric provider no matter how many times a switch occurs.
  • If a customer moves out of a home and discontinues electric service while the temporary bypass is installed, the new owner/tenant will assume responsibility for the bypass charges.  The new customer will also receive a letter by standard mail to educate about the temporary bypass, the fees associated, and what steps must be taken to have it removed.  If the customer wishes to have the bypass removed without having an electrician make the necessary repairs, they must be advised that the removal of the bypass cable will leave them without power.
